Compromise

In a democracy, there is room for diversity. You need to be able to seek the good compromise where everyone feels they get more than they give.

A democracy – without compromise – comes to a standstill. Being able to compromise doesn’t mean giving up – it means working towards solutions where more voices are heard. It’s a balance between standing your ground and being willing to listen and move. The compromise recognizes that we are many different people with different needs and perspectives. Therefore, compromise requires both empathy and negotiation skills. When we train compromise as a democratic muscle, we gain experience in finding common direction – and in participating in communities where you don’t always get exactly what you want, but where you can still recognise yourself in the outcome
